Geoff's views on travelling Africa

Africa cannot be concisely defined; it must be experienced.  I fled
Africa.  I held high hopes for the promise of a better life in Europe.
My dilemma?  My mind and body have been working hard at building a
‘better’ life in the developed world, but I forgot my heart and soul
at Harare International Airport.  I’ve decided to return to Africa,
for better or worse, to become a whole person again.  I pray this time
it is forever.

Egypt

Egypt, such a revolution, so much investment, so much growth and building, so much poverty.  Told that they could not give us the exact population in Cairo, but that something between 18 million and 22 million lived there.  Pollution and encroachment of the city to the pyramids.  The people, proud, so proud.  The country, a military state.  Some large communities have been built and are living on grave sites, hundreds, thousands.  The government some years ago tried to re-instate them, however only +/- 20% were moved to better accommodation, the remaining did not want to leave their community.   They wait, wait for the verdict, will Mubarak go or not.

Traveling Africa; brave and beautiful or risky and reckless?

Tell me everyone, what is it that is so endearing about Africa?  Why is it so captivating?  Whether you love Africa, have been to Africa or dream of going to Africa, what are your real reasons?  Is it the people, the landscapes, the music, the culture, the wildlife, the sunsets?  Indeed, they are unparalleled, but what of the politics, the venom, the poverty?  Is there a small part of you that seeks the adventure, the survival, the untapped opportunity?  Do we go to Africa to witness the beauty and then see its heart-breaking tragedy, or do we go to witness the tragedy and then see its breath-taking beauty?

Where did you go, why did you go and what inspired you to return, or not to return?
